PHILADELPHIA – January 12, 2010 - The Comcast Foundation has awarded a $60,000 grant to the Sisters of Saint Joseph Welcome Center to support its programs providing resources and opportunities to immigrants. The grant funds, to be awarded in three annual installments of $20,000, will be used by the Center to conduct literacy classes, update its computer lab, continue the publication of its triennial newsletter and help with outreach costs.

“We are grateful to Comcast for its generous contribution,” said Sister Eileen Marnien of the Sisters of Saint Joseph Welcome Center. “The Comcast Foundation grant will assist us in our efforts to provide newcomers to our communities, our city and our nation with the help they need to adjust to our culture and succeed in a new and challenging environment.”

“Comcast is committed to working with local organizations to help build strong, diverse communities,” said Kathleen Sullivan, Comcast Vice President of Government and Community Affairs, Philadelphia.  “We are proud to support the Sisters of Saint Joseph Welcome Center as they provide an invaluable service to our new neighbors.”

The Sisters of Saint Joseph Welcome Center’s computer lab includes a dozen computers used for teaching basic computer, literacy and other skills to program participants, as well as in preparation for citizenship and driving tests. The Comcast Foundation grant will help the Center purchase updated versions of language software for the computer lab, and to update staff computers as well.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph Welcome Center also offers social services for those who need help in navigating the health and education systems and in otherwise getting acclimated to new surroundings as they begin their new lives in the United States.
