without helping himself."

Spotlight on Marie Tucci

1.What inspired you to begin volunteering at the Welcome Center?
Marie: After reading in my neighborhood newspaper an article about Sisters of Saint Joseph Welcome Center, I started thinking about visiting there and doing research on their mission and outreach. Upon my first visit, I was asked if I would be interested in volunteering to teach English. My answer was “yes” and I was able to begin teaching at the end of September.

2.What is the most challenging aspect of teaching literacy?
Marie: The most challenging aspect is to keep the lessons as simple as possible in the amount of time that I'm with the students. My goal each week is to communicate the lesson by breaking it down into meaningful bite size pieces. This way the students can absorb the different English concepts, increase their vocabulary, speak English more confidently. I just need to remember to keep it simple.

3.What is the most rewarding aspect of teaching literacy?
Marie: I would have to say the most rewarding aspect of teaching literacy is when I see the students’ faces light up with great big smiles indicating that they were able to grasp an English concept. In other words, they just had a “discovery” moment.

4.What do you like to do besides teach English?
Marie: Besides teaching literacy, I volunteer at the nursing home where my mom lived for almost four years. I help out there on Sunday morning with the Scripture readings and distributing the Eucharist. I enjoy seeing the residents’ faces light up as they receive Jesus. I am open to where God leads me.
